[ Hoping that he isn't reaching out to her at a bad time, Link opens his communion with the mental equivalent of a gentle tap on the shoulder. Hello, ma'am? Good morning.
After a few seconds, his voice appears. ]
Madame Akua. May I have a moment of your time?
I'm interested in learning magic. Or, trying to. They say all Shard-Bearers are capable of it, even if they never knew any type of magic previously. I'm sure it would come in useful in pursuing the Meridian's goals.
I don't know where to begin, however. I thought I might ask you.
[ There is only a slight pause, when Link reaches out to her. Her communion is like twilight on a hot desert, the sand still warm underneath his toes, the heat still unbearable. There's the impression that he is being watched, and that one is on the precipice of stepping off the sands, and into a canyon.
Akua speaks in this, almost like the whisper of a desert wind, her tone amused, welcoming him in. ]
You could not ask for a better teacher, Link. Do you have any experience with magic at all? I assume you know what it is, yes? How present is it in your world?
Not very... it's quite rare, from what I know. And from what I understand, it isn't something easily taught to others, if at all.
[ For the most part, it isn't even called magic, but more like... abilities. What magic is really about in Hyrule is objects of power. ]
I've dealt with several magical items. The magic had nothing to do with me, though...
[ There's a wobble of hesitation in his communion. He doesn't know how much he should tell Akua about being a Hero. Not her concept of a capital-H "Hero," but Hyrule's. He knows so little about how it works that anything he'd say would tow the line of conjecture. But might it be relevant? ]
...Or, at least I don't think it did. But I admit, I don't know that.
That is how most who do not have a gift interact with magic in my world -- though they are rare, to find artifacts at all. How do you find such items, if magic is so rare in your world?
[ Her tone is curious -- borderline clinical -- as she asks the questions of him. She really is just going to interview him for a while before she teaches him anything. Don't mind her, she's just. Really into magic. ]
Do you have types? Elements?
I promise, this will have a point. I need to know how to explain what I am to teach to you.
Such objects are very rare in my world as well, but... I was in a position to come across many of them...
[ Sort of vague, and he knows that, but he doesn't want to bore her or waste their time. Link tends to assume the people in Kenos don't have much reason to care about what was going on in Hyrule or his own big ~destiny~ thing. That being said, all he's told Akua about himself is that he's a solider who once protected an important princess, and there's nothing about that which suggests a particular closeness with rare magical objects... ]
I suppose you can say that magic objects I've encountered had... divine power? Not necessarily elemental, although such magic exists in Hyrule as well. Fire, ice, lightning... magic rods... things of that nature.
If you need an example, I have one with me right now. The acolytes in the Church retrieved it from the timestream for me.
[ A few seconds after saying this, he sends via Communion a visual image of the Master Sword, its long, magnificent white blade polished and beautiful, even in this mental impression. ]
[ It's a magic sword, because of course it is. A magic sword was the sort of thing Heroes would wield -- most of the time, she has to amend for herself. The Barrow Sword was a Villain, and Ishaq had been quite the villain -- but something like this...
It is grand, exudes a sort of pureness that she almost has to turn away from. It's Good in the way that the Angels are Good. Full of promise and Providence that Akua can almost see the reflection of her companion's face in it, if she were to stare too much. ]
Quite the gift. So you are used to more divine magics than arcane, which is no small difference. I know something of how the priests work in my world, it is not... The same, likely, but it will help with your casting. They use belief, rather than... [ The impression of a wave of her hand. ] computational casting. That is what I do.
I think I can help set you on the path toward discovery, at the very least, hm?
[ When Akua makes these references to different kinds of magic, he doesn't just nod along. He feels an itch to know about all of them. Link's mind is like sponge. He can't help but feel intensely curious about new ideas, new places, new things, and the potential they may carry. The Savant within his soul makes him even more eager, not only to learn, but to understand and master. That energy, tightly-wound but politely held back, permeates their connection. He's nothing if not an eager student. ]
...Yes. Yes, please. I'll be in your debt. When can I see you?
[ Her schedule is busy but not full. Open enough that she can accommodate Link, but not so open that she can drop what she does today. ]
I will be happy to give you as thorough an education as you can absorb. I've had the displeasure of instructing total laymen in the arts, and watched as they stumbled their way through forces they cannot even understand, and watch as they somehow make their will manifest regardless of their understanding, so I do not doubt my ability to help.
And if you are smarter than my last student, this may even be pleasant.
[ His enthusiasm is palpable. Him, learning magic! Link never would have dreamed of such a thing before coming to Kenos. He's never had that kind of power. ]
I will come find you after breakfast is served in the Tribune. Should I bring anything? Aside from my smarts and pleasantness. I might stumble, but I promise to try my hardest.
[ Link is the sort of Hero that Akua sees as earnest. He really does try to do everything he can, invests himself deeply, and draws from a well of resolve that is frankly admirable. He also will cut himself to the wick if left alone.
Mind, Akua isn't the sort to... guide heroes, but as they are allies, there are stranger things that have happened.
Besides, she may need him, and that's good enough a reason as any to help the kid along. ]
But do not worry about bringing anything. My home is well stocked. You will know it when you see it. Just head [ to a location that is somewhere in Springstar. Her home is the most verdant on the street, with high windows and plantlife practically... teeming, thanks to Set's influence. ]
